X-rays were taken of the annular ring and it became apparent that a hole was present in one of the pieces. The hole was not visible to the eye because it was filled with dirt, textile fibres and corroded iron. The corroded iron was from the remains of where an iron needle fitted into the hole.

During the conservation of the object the debris in the hole was removed and set aside for further analysis.

Storage

The annular brooch was stored in a clear plastic box lined with foam and polyester wadding.

The foam was cut to shape the outline of each piece of the brooch so it would slot in and be securely protected.
