Surface Dirt and dust was removed using dry cleaning methods such as soft brushes and a museum vacuum on low suction with a net guard covering the nozzle.
This was followed by wet cleaning the surface of the pediment with Tri-Ammonium Citrate 2% in distilled water as it was the most affective in removing the engrained dirt and did not affect the state of the oil gilding. Acetone was used to treat the water gilding.

Once the gesso had dried it was then sanded down to make it smooth, level and matched the original appearance of the corner

Cutting and Shaping the Glass


Stained glass is cut using a tool known as a 'Cutting wheel.' The tool makes a shallow score on the surface of the glass which allows it to be broken into two pieces.
A design was drawn and the tool was used to cut the individual pieces of glass that make it up.
Painting

Reusche Colours from 'Reusche & Co' were used to paint the design on the glass surfaces.
'Ancient brown, reusche colour' was used and mixed with Gum Arabic to liquidise it's powdered form.
The colour and Arabic are then mixed together using a glass mula, this ensures that the reusche powder is ground completely into the Arabic.
The paint is applied to the glass after it is cleaned with vinegar which removes any stains or finger prints that may have been left on the surface during storage or handling.
The paint is applied with a small brush before a needle is used to sharpen the design.


The glass is fired in a kiln thus making the paint fuse into the top layer of glass.
A second layer of paint is then applied to the glass called a 'Wash.'
Water is added to the Reusche and Arabic mix which dilutes it, creating a thin wash which is applied to the whole surface of the glass.

The Wash is then worked into the glass using brushes or needles. This is done to provide shadow and shading.
The glass is then fired for a second time fusing the Wash layer to the glass surface.
